At Hillbourne Primary School, we aim to promote a love of reading, which we believe to be a fundamental life skills. We teach reading through developing children’s sight vocabulary of the many tricky words in the English language as well as through a systematic approach to Phonics.
During the school day, children will read individually, within small groups , with their class and will be read to by their teacher. When children practise reading regularly, they become fluent readers rapidly.
When children are learning to read, they will bring home an individual reading book from our colour banded collection or from our phonetically decodable collection. Your child’s class teacher will ensure that the book is at a suitable level.
