Dear Parents and Friends
The summer holidays feel like a distant memory, despite the really lovely weather yesterday and today!
All the children have settled back into the routines and expectations of school with ease and we are particularly pleased with the way our new Reception children have embraced their first full weeks of school.
Years 5 and 6 have been to Charmouth on the hunt for fossils this week. Thank you to those parents who were able to support them on this visit.
We are very proud of our newly selected House Captains and Vice Captains who have been chosen to lead their houses because of their mature and responsible attitudes in school. They are:
Lulworth: Zach and Harry K
Sandbanks: Asraya and Brandon
Portland: Harry C and Kian
Kimmeridge: Daniel S and Sherkia
School Council representatives were elected last week. Children were invited to fellow nominate themselves and to explain to their class why they should be selected. The classes then voted. Congratulations to the following children:
Rotary Club Shoe box appeal
This week we welcomed representatives from the Poole Rotary Club into assembly to talk about their shoe box project. The Rotary Club works with local organisation to collect shoe box gifts which they distribute to disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania. Leaflets have been sent home with Hillbourne pupils describing how we can support with this project. We have a large supply of shoe boxes if you would like to help.
Alternatively, we welcome items to go into boxes which the children can make up in school.
Dates for individual class assemblies are published in class letters. All dates are also on display in the front noticeboard. We will publish a reminder on facebook on the Monday of each week.
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 assemblies will be held in the Acorns Hall at 11.15am on Wednesdays. Please go to the Acorns Office between 11am and 11.10.
Years 3- 6 assemblies are held at 11am in the Oaks Hall. Please go to the Oaks Office after 10.50am.
A reminder that buggies cannot be taken into either hall for health and safety reasons and should be left in the waiting areas outside.
We have been thrilled with the improved quality of lunch from our new providers, Poole Grammar School. We hope that your children are providing you with favourable feedback!
We are hosting a taster day for the children next week on Thursday, 4th October 2018.
Lunch will be available for all KS 1 pupils so if your child normally brings a packed lunch, please encourage them to try the hot food. The menu that day will be Cheese and Tomato Pasta Bake and dessert will be sticky toffee pudding.
If your KS 2 child wishes to try a hot lunch on that day, please complete and return the slip below. Meals cost £2.30 unless your child is eligible for free school meals, in which case we can provide a free lunch. Please return your slip and payment by Tuesday, 2nd October 2018.
You may be aware from media coverage that school budgets are becoming increasingly stretched. At Hillbourne, we have worked incredibly hard to maintain small class sizes and appropriate support for all our pupils but can clearly see that this will not be sustainable without increased funding. Headteachers across the country will be lobbying Parliament tomorrow. I will be part of a group of Headteachers representing Poole to encourage the Chancellor and his colleagues in the Department of Education to use the Autumn budget to invest properly in schools and allow us to continue to make the difference to our young people.
Heart of Hillbourne Bingo Night
The Heart of Hillbourne are hosting a family Bingo night on Friday 5th October in the Oaks Hall at 3.30-5pm. Tickets are limited to 100 so please get your tickets promptly!
Tickets will be on sale at the start and end of the school day in the front playground from Tuesday next week.
Macmillan Coffee and Cake Afternoon
On Friday 12th October, Jane and the Coffee Morning parents and friends will be organising afternoon tea and a cake sale in the Acorns Hall between 2.30 and 3.45pm. Donations of cakes would be very welcome on the morning of the 12th in order to help us make as much money as possible for MacMillan.
Times Table Rockstars
If your child is using Times Table Rockstars and you would like to find out more about the skills required to excel in this game, please join us in the Oaks Hall next Wednesday at 8.45am when we will demonstrate how and why we are encouraging this game.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
With best wishes
