As we head in to the last four weeks of this academic year there is lots of information that we have to share with you for the end of this term and the beginning of next year.

End of the Day Trial
As our pupil numbers are beginning to increase across the school, the number of adults on site, at end of the day collecting their children, is also increasing. Our main aim, throughout the school, is keeping the pupils safe. With this in mind, we are going to trial a new End of the Day routine. This will come in the form of a one-way system. Twin Oaks Nursey have very kindly agreed to allow us to use their gate and playground within this new system-something we are very grateful for. This routine is only a trial to see whether or not it is safer for pupils and easier for teachers to ensure their pupils leave with the correct adult. Attached to the email is also a map and set of instructions to remind you of the route. The trial will begin next Monday, 26th June.
Summer Reading Challenge
On Monday 3rd July there will be an assembly for the whole school introducing this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. The aim is for pupils to read 6 books or more over the Summer Holidays. If they do, they will be rewarded with stickers, badges and other prizes! School Ties
A reminder that school ties can be purchased through the MCAS app. Pupils in Year 2 moving into Year 3 will have to have a tie for the start of the new school year in September.
Universal Hot School Meals – Current Year 2
If your Year 2 child currently receives a hot school meal under the Universal School Meal scheme this will finish at the end of term. If you still wish your child to receive a hot school meal when they are in Year 3 you will need to order and pay for their meal via the MCAS app. More details to follow.
Postcards – Holiday News
Children are welcome to send postcards to members of school staff to share their holiday news – we will be in and out getting the classrooms ready over the holidays and would love to hear what they’ve been getting up to and it will also give them meaningful opportunities to practice their writing skills over the long break.

Dogs on site
Unfortunately, we are unable to allow dogs on site. This includes dogs that are being carried. We do understand that many dogs are well trained, but we also recognise that even the most well-behaved dogs can be unpredictable. We also must respect those families who have chosen not to have pets or pupils who might be frightened of dogs. Pupil safety is our main priority, so we thank you in advance for following this rule.
Year 6 UKMT Junior Maths Challenge
Congratulations are in order for Mia, Lydia, Jack, Prabik, Kobie, Tommy, Angela, Ella, Kaya and Alice in Year 6 who took part in the Junior Maths Challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust. This was a national competition (open to Year 8 and below) that aims to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency. All the children did fantastically well and managed to achieve awards ranging from participation, Bronze, Silver and to even Gold! Lydia and Jack were both rewarded for their Gold certificates with an automatic entry to the next round where we wish them the best of luck. We are so proud of you all for representing Hillbourne so fantastically well.
Attendance
Attendance is a high priority at Hillbourne and we are working together with the local authority to improve attendance across all year groups. It has been pleasing to see that there has been an improvement in our attendance figures since the half term holiday. ‘Well done’ and ‘Thank you’ to you all for working with us to improve. We have four weeks left to keep this going and to finish on a high.
Summer Safety Reminder
Just a reminder as the weather is now warming up please remember to provide your child with a full water bottle each morning, which they can top up during the day. It would also be great if you could put sun screen on your children before they come into school and provide a hat too.
Industrial Action
There is proposed industrial action on Wednesday, 5th and Friday, 7th July 2023. We have no further information regarding school closure at this time. We will of course inform you of any class or whole school closures as soon as possible. The proposed strike action does not affect the Year 6 residential.

Unfortunately, due to the school field not being ready and the lack of space parents will be unable to attend sports day this year. We will take as many photographs of the children as we can and will post the pictures on the school Facebook page. We really hope that next year parents will be able to attend.
Newsletter 25th May 2023
Dear Parents and Carers,
This half term has certainly whizzed by. It is important that we recognise the incredible effort our Year 6 pupils put in to the recent SATs week, they were so focussed during all of the tests. Whatever the results, we are so proud of how they behaved and the maturity shown by all pupils.
As we reach the end of the first part of the Summer Term, now is a good time to remind you all that your child will need a hat in school to wear at breaktime and lunchtime. Currently, there is limited shade when the children are playing on the MUGAs and this is something, as a school, we are looking to improve, ensuring our children are safe at all times. We also recommend, as long as your child is not allergic, that you apply sun cream to your son or daughter before they come to school. Unfortunately, staff are unable to apply sun cream in school.
A reminder that school closes for half term at 3.15pm tomorrow and reopens on Monday 5th June. Long may the good weather continue throughout the half term holidays!
Healthy Selfies Challenge
As a school, we are always promoting making healthy choices, whether this is through physical and mental wellbeing or food choices and healthy eating. We have a challenge for you! Over the half term, we would like you to take snaps of your children or even as a family making healthy choices. This will then form part of the community display showing the different ways we are making healthy choices! Be as inventive as you would like!! Judo or climbing, making healthy snacks, do walks to roller skating; let’s promote Hillbourne Primary School being active and healthy. There will be a prize for the best entry from each class.
Lunch Times
We are working hard with the children to make lunch time a really positive experience for everyone. We now have relaxing music in the hall and quiet zones outside for those children that want to read or do a quiet activity. Our lunchtime team are now also organising games for the children to join in with. Our special Key Stage 2 monitors are also helping the younger children by assisting them to cut up their lunch and clear their plates.

Parents/carers of pupils claiming benefit related free school meals can go direct to the organisations to make arrangements for their children to attend.
School Meal Vouchers
We are happy to confirm that BCP have agreed to support school meal vouchers this term. They will be sent via email to those people eligible and be £15 per child. Please contact the school office if you have any queries.
Trading cards
Please can we remind you that trading cards such as football or Pokemon are not allowed in school. This is in case they go missing, which can be upsetting for children. If they are seen by an adult, they will be taken to the office to be collected by a parent or carer at the end of the school day.
HAMWIC Foundation Non-Uniform Day – REMINDER!
This year we will be supporting the HAMWIC Foundation by hosting a Non-Uniform day on Friday 26th May. The money we raise will go towards their Christmas Eve boxes, as well as other items, and will be given to some of the most vulnerable children and families within HAMWIC schools. We are asking for a donation of £1 per child, unless you have more than one child at the school, in which case we are asking for 50p per child. Nearer the time, this donation will be able to be paid via MCAS.
Attendance
Attendance is high priority at Hillbourne and we are working together with the local authority to improve attendance across all year groups. Can we also remind you that we are unable to authorise holidays during term time. Any holiday absence should be notified to the School via email office@hillbourne.poole.sch.uk.
We are now approaching the end of the school year and it would be wonderful to have a real improvement on our attendance and late arrivals. Please contact the school office if you have any difficulties or queries.
Introducing the Support for Inter-Parental Conflict (SIPCo) project
The SIPCo project aims to raise parents’ awareness of the impact of their conflict on their children and teaches parents strategies to reduce their conflict.
Referred parents will be randomly allocated to receive either Mentalising-Based Therapy for Parents under Pressure (MBT-PP) or given access to digital resources for reducing parental conflict, with support in how to use them from our Healthy Relationships Co-ordinator . MBT-PP involves online therapy sessions with a therapist, in which parents are supported to communicate better. MBT-PP is delivered by Tavistock Relationships.
School staff can refer families to the project who:
• Have a child aged 8-14
• Have intense, frequent, and unresolved inter-parental conflict
• Are willing to try something new to help reduce their conflict
